John Hurt was an English actor who, following his film debut with 'The Wild and the Willing' (1962), gained recognition for his first major role as Richard Rich in 'A Man for All Seasons' (1966). He portrayed wrongly convicted murderer Timothy Evans in '10 Rillington Place' (1971), for which he earned his first 'BAFTA Award' nomination, and later won the award for playing Quentin Crisp in the television film 'The Naked Civil Servant' (1975).
In 1978, he gained international acclaim for his performance in the prison drama 'Midnight Express', which won him another 'BAFTA', a 'Golden Globe', and his first nomination for an 'Academy Award'. Portraying Joseph Merrick in David Lynch's biopic 'The Elephant Man' (1980) earned him a third 'BAFTA Award', as well as nominations for 'Golden Globe' and 'Oscar'.
Other successful movies in his filmography includes 'Alien' (1979), 'Champions' (1984), 'The Hit' (1984), 'Nineteen Eighty-Four' (1984), 'Profumo affair, Scandal' (1989), 'The Field' (1990), and 'Rob Roy' (1995). More recently, he played Garrick Ollivander in the top grossing 'Harry Potter' franchise (2001-11), and appeared on films like 'Hellboy' (2004), 'The Skeleton Key' (2005), 'V for Vendetta' (2005), and 'Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull' (2008).
