Late American actress and comedienne Estelle Getty made her debut in films with ‘Team-Mates’ (1978) and in television with TV series ‘Nurse’ (1981). She became popular playing Sophia Petrillo in TV series ‘The Golden Girls’ (1985–1992) that won her a Golden Globe Award and a Primetime Emmy Award. She furthered her fame with other notable TV series like ‘The Golden Palace’ (1992-1993) and ‘Empty Nest’ (1993-1995); and films like ‘Mannequin’ (1987).
She started acting in Yiddish theater and forayed as a comedienne in Catskills borscht belt resorts before commencing her career in films and television. An award-winning and accomplished actress, Getty too had to face her share of initial struggles before she could garner substantial and major roles. She is remembered for some of her best roles in successful film and TV productions. However, some of her works have also garnered negative critical reviews and were marked as her worst performances.
