Nedenia Marjorie Hutton, popularly known as Dina Merrill, made her debut in the play ‘The Mermaid Singing,’ in 1945. She was nicknamed ‘Hollywood’s new Grace Kelly’ in the late 1950s and 1960s.
During her early career she appeared mainly in comedy films like ‘Desk Set (1957), ‘A Nice Little Bank That Should Be Robbed’ (1958), and ‘Operation Petticoat’ (1959). She later explored other genres and appeared in the family drama ‘The Sundowners’ (1960), the crime movie ‘The Young Savages’ (1961), and the biopic ‘The Greatest’ (1977).
She received positive reviews for her performance as ‘Celia’ in ‘The Player’ (1992) but failed to impress the audience as ‘Cynthia Young’ in ‘Caddyshack II’ (1988). Merrill appeared in several television series of which her performance as Calamity Jane in ‘Batman’ (1968) and Doris in ‘Roseanne’ (1996) were appreciated by critics.
She made guest appearances on television shows ‘Bonanza’ (1966) and ‘Quincy, M.E.’ (1976). She also made recurring guest appearances on game shows such as ‘The Match Game’ and ‘Hollywood Squares.’
